So excited to have found these beauties from Mauritania. They are incredible examples of woven leather into intricate patterns, often generated from the henna designs of the different tribes and villages. The patterns on the mats can carry symbolic meanings, representing elements of Tuareg culture, religion, and daily life. For example, geometric patterns might symbolize the desert, protection, or spiritual beliefs.
These mats are around 3.5m wide to 5.5m long.
These large mats are very unusual, it is hard to find mats that measure more that 3m/9.84ft wide and especially with such intricate weave. The tradition is handed down through generations.
